Collections Rescue

Not everything was lost! Right after the fire, the Museu Nacional/UFRJ’s Scientific Collections Rescue Nucleum was created, and thanks to an intense hard of a multidisciplinary team, thousands of objects of great historical and scientific importance began to be rescued.

Emergency Works

Because of the support from UNESCO and the Education Ministry, the work to remove the debris, shore up the building, and install the temporary roof begin. Containers to support the collection rescue is installed.

Educational activities and Exhibitions

In January 2019, the first Museu Nacional/UFRJ exhibition after the fire was inaugurated. “Quando Nem Tudo era Gelo – Novas Descobertas no Continente Antártico”, was held at the Centro Cultural Museu Casa da Moeda do Brasil.

The Arquivo Nacional in Rio de Janeiro hosted in October 2019, the exhibition “Os Primeiros Brasileiros”, including photos, songs, movies, and indigenous artifacts. Part of the objects were some of the ones from the Museu Nacional/UFRJ’s collection which were not in the fire.

In November 2019, the Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins (RJ) hosted the exhibition“Ressurgindo das Cinzas,” with rocky and metallic meteorites from the Museu Nacional/UFRJ’s collection.

In November 2019, the exhibit Santo Antônio de Sá: Primeira Vila do Recôncavo da Guanabara was hosted at Caixa Cultural (RJ), exhibiting archeological objects found during the oil complex construction in the Rio de Janeiro State, in Itaboraí.
